EMDR Therapy

Shift into the life you want to be living.

Trauma healing for your brain and body

Do you feel overwhelmed by memories or feelings from the past?

Are you tired of trauma resurfacing and impacting your life?

"The goal of EMDR treatment is to rapidly metabolize the dysfunctional residue from the past and transform it into something useful." - Dr. Francine Shapiro

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy can support you to shift into the life you want to be living.

This therapy modality supports the brain and body’s natural ability to reprocess traumatic or disturbing experiences.

As a well-researched, proven, and effective treatment, EMDR therapy is designed to help the brain process and heal from trauma and other distressing experiences. Using guided eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation, EMDR protocols support the nervous system to reprocess negative memories and emotions.

How the EMDR Process Works:

1. Supportive Environment: Healing occurs when we feel safe and supported. Therefore, just like any other type of therapy, attention is paid first to setting up resources that support a sense of safety, acceptance, and care both in and out of sessions.

2. Targeting the Source of Distress: We will then identify the source of the emotional pain or challenge, which may show up in the form of memories, thoughts, beliefs, and/or feelings. Through memory networks, these points of pain and distress are often tied to past traumas or disturbing experiences.

3. Dual Attention Stimulus & Reprocessing: While focusing on the identified points of pain or distress (targets), attention will be directed to a dual attention stimulus such as following hand movements with your eyes or experiencing taps or sounds that alternate from side to side. By paying attention to both the target and the present moment stimulus, the brain is supported in reprocessing and integrating the stuck emotions and information associated with the disturbing or traumatic past experience.

4. Healing & Reframing: As your brain engages in the natural healing process, positive shifts begin to occur in the memory network connected to the original target. You may notice changes in how you feel about the past experience, the intensity of emotions, and the beliefs you hold about yourself and the world. Often EMDR therapy creates a sense of resilience, peace, and strength.

EMDR therapy can be used to treat PTSD, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, phobias, and more. If you’re struggling with unresolved trauma or emotional distress, this client-centered approach could be a transformative past of your healing.

“For all of us, unprocessed memories are generally the basis of negative responses, attitudes and behaviors. Processed memories, on the other hand, are the basis of adaptive positive responses, attitudes and behaviors.”
